Bosnia in winter: what to expect and how to prepare

Snow in Sarajevo and the mountains, what to do besides skiing, the winter-tyre rule from 1 November to 1 April, and what a family from the Gulf should pack.

Winter in Bosnia is a different season altogether: snow in the mountains and sometimes in the city, short days, and calmer accommodation rates than in the summer peak. Visitors from the Gulf find something they do not have at home, provided they come prepared.

What is the weather like?

Sarajevo lies in a valley ringed by mountains, and January temperatures hover around freezing: slightly above by day and below at night. Snow falls on the city several times a season and may melt within days, while it stays all winter in the nearby mountains. Mostar and the south are clearly milder and rarely see snow.

An honest note: on still winter days fog and smoke collect in the Sarajevo valley and air quality drops. On those days go up the mountain, where the sun and clean air sit above the fog. For a month-by-month view read Bosnia weather by season.

What to do in winter

  • Snow and skiing: Jahorina and Bjelašnica are roughly half an hour to an hour from Sarajevo, with ski schools, beginner slopes and sledges for children. See the Jahorina and Bjelašnica ski guide.
  • Trebević cable car: it climbs from the old town to the mountain in minutes, and the snowy view is among the best in Sarajevo.
  • Vrelo Bosne and Ilidža: the spring of the river Bosna is beautiful in snow, and the horse carriages run in winter too.
  • The old town: Baščaršija under snow, Bosnian coffee and sweets somewhere warm. A winter market is usually held in central Sarajevo in December and January.
  • The milder south: a day in Mostar and Blagaj when you want a break from the cold.

Driving in winter

According to the Bosnian automobile club BIHAMK, winter equipment is mandatory for all cars in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1 November to 1 April: winter tyres (M+S marking) on all four wheels, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm of tread plus snow chains in the car. If you rent a car, ask the company plainly which tyres are fitted before you collect it.

  • Mountain roads can close temporarily after heavy snowfall. BIHAMK’s road information and assistance number is 1282.
  • Drive slower than you are used to, keep a longer distance, and avoid night driving in the mountains if you are not used to snow.
  • If you are not confident, a private driver or organised transfer is easier for you and your family.

What to wear

Dress in layers: a thermal base, wool or fleece over it, then a winter jacket that keeps out water and wind. Most important are winter shoes with a non-slip sole, plus gloves, a hat and a scarf, especially for children. Ski clothing can be rented at the resorts, so do not buy it for a single trip.

Ready-made programmes and places

If you prefer a day-by-day plan, see Winter and skiing: 7 days and New Year in Sarajevo: 6 days. Each place has its own page with photos and location: Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Trebević, Vrelo Bosne.

Final tips

  • Book mountain accommodation early for New Year and school holidays.
  • Prayer times fall close together in winter because the days are short; check them on arrival.
  • Direct flights from the Gulf are fewer in winter than in summer, so check the airlines before fixing your dates.
  • Save the emergency numbers in Bosnia on your phone.
