Places to visit
The best cities to visit in Bosnia: which one suits your trip?
Ten towns and cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and what makes each special, from Sarajevo and Mostar to Jajce, Bihać and Trebinje.
Most visitors know only Sarajevo and Mostar, but Bosnia has small, beautiful towns that deserve a day or a night.
1. Sarajevo
The capital has everything: the old bazaar, Ottoman mosques, Austro-Hungarian streets and mountains half an hour away. Allow at least two days.
2. Mostar
The city of the Old Bridge on the Neretva. One day is enough; a night is better.
3. Jajce
A waterfall in the town centre, a fortress and the Pliva lakes next door.
4. Travnik
Once the seat of Ottoman viziers: a fortress, the Coloured Mosque and the Plava Voda spring.
5. Konjic
Halfway between Sarajevo and Mostar, known for rafting on the Neretva.
6. Bihać and the Una
In the far north-west. The emerald Una and the Štrbački Buk falls are among the finest landscapes in the country. Allow two days.
7. Počitelj
An Ottoman stone village on a hill above the Neretva.
8. Trebinje
A quiet, sunny town in the far south, close to Dubrovnik.
9. Višegrad
On the Drina in the east, home of the UNESCO-listed Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge.
10. Neum
The only Bosnian town on the Adriatic.
