Emergency numbers in Bosnia and what to do if something goes wrong
Police 122, fire 123, ambulance 124, the general number 112 and roadside help 1282, plus what to do if you lose your passport, your car breaks down or you need a doctor.
Most trips to Bosnia pass without any problem, but it is wise to have the important numbers on your phone before you need them. These numbers work across Bosnia and Herzegovina and are dialled directly from any phone.
How to call
Dial the number as it is, whether you use a Bosnian SIM or your home SIM on roaming. The country code is +387. The operator may not speak Arabic, so speak English slowly and say first where you are (town, street or hotel) and then what happened. If you are in a hotel or apartment, ask reception or the owner to call with you.
If you need a doctor
- Emergency: call 124 or 112.
- Not urgent: Sarajevo has large public hospitals and private clinics. The Clinical Centre of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) is the largest.
- Pharmacies: look for the word Apoteka and a green cross. Some open at night; search the map for “dežurna apoteka” (duty pharmacy).
- Carry your travel insurance and keep every invoice and medical report.
If your passport is lost or stolen
- Report it at the nearest police station and ask for a copy of the report.
- Contact your country’s embassy or consulate in Sarajevo for a replacement travel document.
- Always keep a photo of your passport and visa on your phone and in your email.
For UAE citizens: according to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the mission in Sarajevo is at Bulevar Meše Selimovića 17a, its email is SarajevoCon@mofa.gov.ae, and the emergency number for citizens abroad is +971 800 24. Citizens of other Gulf states should check the missions page of their own foreign ministry before travelling, as addresses and numbers change.
If your car breaks down or you have an accident
- Switch on the hazard lights, put on the reflective vest and place the warning triangle behind the car.
- In an accident with injuries call the police on 122 and an ambulance on 124, and do not move the car.
- For towing, assistance and road conditions call BIHAMK on 1282.
- If the car is rented, call the rental company at once and follow its instructions.

Is Bosnia safe?
Generally yes, and visitors are welcome. The precautions are the same as in any tourist country: watch your belongings in crowded places and leave nothing visible in the car. More in Is Bosnia safe? Practical tips.
