Practical tips
First time in Bosnia: 12 practical tips before you travel
What surprises first-time visitors to Bosnia: cash, driving, weather, Sundays and distances. Short tips that save you time.
Bosnia is an easy country for visitors, but a few small details surprise first-timers.
1. Cash first
Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; the old bazaar, villages, bakeries and taxis need cash.
2. Buy a local SIM
Bosnia is outside the EU, so European roaming bundles usually do not cover it.
3. Headlights in daytime
Dipped headlights are required at all times, and seat belts for all passengers.
4. Winter equipment
In the winter season cars must carry winter equipment. Check with the rental company.
5. Distance is not kilometres
Roads between towns are mountainous. Plan one trip a day.
6. Changeable weather
Warm days, cool evenings and sudden rain. Carry a light jacket.
7. Sundays
Many shops close or open briefly on Sundays; restaurants, cafés and sights stay open.
8. Tap water
Tap water is drinkable in Sarajevo and most towns.
9. Halal
Mostly halal in Sarajevo and Muslim-majority towns; ask elsewhere.
10. In the mountains, stay on the paths
In remote mountain areas keep to marked roads and trails and respect warning signs.
11. Tipping
No fixed rule; rounding up is enough.
12. Two words
Hvala means thank you, dobar dan means good day.
