Practical tips
Driving and car rental in Bosnia: rules, roads and winter
Drive on the right, lights on even in daytime, and winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 15 April. What to know before you take the key.
A car is the best way to see Bosnia beyond Sarajevo: the mountains, lakes and villages are hard to reach by public transport. Driving is easy if you know the rules and respect the mountain roads.
The basic rules
Traffic drives on the right. Dipped headlights must be on even in daylight, and seat belts are compulsory for everyone. Usual limits: 50 km/h in towns, 80 outside, 100 on expressways and 130 on the motorway — the sign in front of you always prevails. Speed cameras are common.
Winter
From 15 November to 15 April the car must be fitted with winter tyres marked M+S with at least 4 mm of tread. Rental companies equip their cars, but ask and check at pickup. In the mountains you may need chains after snowfall.

Roads and distances
The A1 motorway covers only part of the route and is tolled at booths. The rest are two-lane roads following rivers and valleys — beautiful but slow: plan on an average of 60 km/h. Avoid night driving in the mountains where you can.
Renting
You need your passport, a valid licence and a credit card for the deposit. An international permit alongside your national licence is recommended. Read what the insurance covers, and ask if you plan to cross into Croatia or Montenegro — it needs permission and a specific insurance document. Photograph the car before you leave.
An easier alternative
If you would rather not drive unfamiliar roads, hire a car with a driver by the day: he knows the roads and the parking, and you enjoy the view.
