Practical tips
Is Bosnia safe for tourists? Practical tips before you travel
Bosnia is a safe country for families and visitors, with a few simple points: emergency numbers, drinking water, and keeping to marked roads and trails in remote mountain areas.
Every first-time family asks this, and the short answer is yes: Bosnia is a safe country to visit, and its people are known for their hospitality. These notes make the trip calmer.
In the cities
Families walk in Sarajevo, Mostar and the other tourist towns at night without concern. Ordinary care is enough: keep your bag in front of you in busy markets and leave nothing visible in the car.

In nature and the mountains
Some remote areas still contain landmines from the 1990s war, marked with red signs showing a skull. Tourist sites, paved roads and approved trails are safe. The simple rule: do not enter abandoned land or an unmarked path, and turn back if you see the sign. With a local guide you have nothing to worry about.
Health and water
Tap water in Sarajevo and most towns is drinkable, and mountain springs are part of the pleasure. Pharmacies are plentiful. Take travel health insurance and carry your regular medicines in their original boxes.
Customs worth knowing
Bosnians are hospitable and many speak English; in tourist areas you will find Arabic speakers too. Take off your shoes when entering homes and mosques. Smoking is still common in some cafés, so ask for a non-smoking section.
