Food and cafés
Bosnian food and cafés: what to try in Sarajevo
Ćevapi, burek, Bosnian coffee in a copper pot and walnut sweets: a short guide to the dishes not to miss, and how to order them.
Food in Sarajevo is simple, good and inexpensive by European standards, and halal is available almost everywhere.
Ćevapi
Charcoal-grilled meat fingers in soft somun bread with chopped onion. You order by number: five, ten or fifteen. Locals add kajmak and yoghurt.
Burek and pies
Thin rolled pastry: with meat it is burek, with cheese sirnica, with spinach zeljanica, with potato krompiruša. Eaten hot with yoghurt.
Bosnian coffee
Served in a small copper džezva with a handleless cup and a piece of lokum. Pour a little, let the foam rise, and take your time.

Home dishes
Try begova čorba (a rich chicken soup), dolma (stuffed vegetables) and klepe (small meat dumplings with yoghurt and garlic).
Sweets
Bosnian baklava, tufahija — a poached apple filled with walnuts — and syrupy hurmašica.
Modern cafés
Ferhadija street and the lanes around it are full of modern cafés with outdoor seating in summer.
Tip: in traditional restaurants, ask for the dish of the day.
Opening hours and prices change — check before you go.
