Studying in Bosnia: universities, language and student life

Sarajevo is a university city with students from many countries. It is calm and relatively safe, and halal food and mosques are everywhere.

Types of university

The University of Sarajevo is the largest public university and teaches mostly in Bosnian. Private international universities teach in English, among them the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), International Burch University (IBU) and the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST). Other cities such as Mostar, Tuzla, Banja Luka and Zenica have public universities too.

Language

English-taught programmes usually ask for proof of level or a preparatory year. Bosnian-taught programmes need a language year first.

Degree recognition

Before paying any fee, ask the ministry or recognition body in your own country whether it recognises that university and that exact programme, especially for medicine and engineering.

Paperwork and residence

Universities usually ask for translated and certified school certificates and a passport. After admission the student applies for temporary residence for study at the Service for Foreigners Affairs. Get the exact list from the university and the Service, because it changes.
