Shopping in Sarajevo: what to buy and where
Copper coffee sets from the coppersmiths’ lane, handmade rugs and sweets, plus the modern malls. A short guide to gifts worth taking home from Bosnia.
Shopping in Sarajevo comes in two kinds: the old bazaar, where every piece has a story, and the modern malls with international brands. They are one tram ride apart.
The coppersmiths’ lane
In Baščaršija there is a lane called Kazandžiluk where coppersmiths have worked for centuries. You will find the džezva pot, fildžan cups and hand-engraved trays. Ask whether a piece is handmade or factory-made — the difference in price and value is clear.

The bezistan and rugs
The Gazi Husrev-beg Bezistan is a covered market from the sixteenth century with accessories, scarves and gifts. Handmade Bosnian rugs and kilims are sold in specialist shops around the bazaar. A well-known souvenir is a pen made from a spent cartridge, a reminder of the city’s history.
Edible gifts
Lokum, walnut baklava, ground Bosnian coffee and mountain honey. Ask for travel packaging.
Modern malls
In the centre are BBI Centar, known for selling neither alcohol nor pork, Sarajevo City Center (SCC) and Alta. They have international brands, restaurants and children’s play areas — useful on a rainy day.
Tips
Bargaining in the old bazaar is light and polite. Mall prices are fixed. Ask the shop about a tax refund for foreign visitors if your purchases are large.
