Day trips
The Sarajevo–Mostar train: one of Europe’s most scenic rail journeys
About two hours through mountains and tunnels and along the green Neretva river. How to book, what you see from the window, and who the trip suits.
If you have a day for Mostar and would rather not drive, take the train. Travellers rate the Sarajevo–Mostar line among the most scenic in Europe, and the ticket costs less than lunch.
The journey
The train leaves Sarajevo’s main station, climbs to the Ivan pass, then descends through tunnels and over high viaducts to Konjic. From there it follows the water: green Jablanica lake, then the narrow Neretva valley to Mostar.

Tickets and times
Buy your ticket at the station counter before travel. Times change between summer and winter; the usual pattern is one morning and one afternoon train. In season arrive half an hour early, as window seats go quickly.
In Mostar
Mostar station is within walking distance of the old town and the Old Bridge. You can go in the morning and return on the evening train, or stay a night and continue to Blagaj and Počitelj. Our article “Mostar in one day” has the full plan.
Who is it for?
Families (children love the tunnels), anyone who wants a break from driving, and photographers. With lots of luggage or elderly travellers, a car with a driver is easier door to door.
