Practical tips
From Sarajevo airport to the city: taxi, bus and getting around
The airport is close and you reach the centre in about fifteen minutes. How to take a metered taxi, when the bus makes sense, and how to use the tram in Sarajevo.
Sarajevo airport is small and easy, and close to town: about nine kilometres south-west of the centre. From the aircraft door to your hotel door is usually under an hour.
Taxi
Taxis wait outside arrivals. A licensed taxi has a TAXI sign and a meter — make sure it is running. Carry cash in marks, as most drivers do not take cards. With a family and several bags, a pre-arranged pickup is easier.
Bus
A bus links the airport with the city centre on a timetable that changes with the season and flight schedule. It works if you arrive in the daytime with light luggage. Ask the airport information desk for the current times.

Getting around Sarajevo
Sarajevo is a long city in a valley, and the tram runs along it from Ilidža in the west to Baščaršija in the east. Buy your ticket at a kiosk (cheaper than from the driver) and stamp it as you board. The old town itself is for walking.
When do you need a car?
Not inside Sarajevo. You need one for trips: the mountains, Mostar, the waterfalls. You can rent at the airport or take a car with a driver who knows the roads.
